Jesus was a man who lived about two-thousand years ago. However, it was clear to those living during that time that this Jesus was no ordinary man. During his life on earth, Jesus claimed to be God (for example, Mark 14:60–62 and John 10:30). He was a human being claiming to be divine! This is hugely significant because by making these claims, the man Jesus puts us all to a decision. Who is Jesus?
As one famous theologian wrote:
A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on the level with a man who says he is a poached egg—or he would be the devil of hell. You must take your choice. Either this was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us (C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity).
At the Church of the Open Bible, we believe that Jesus is who he said he is, did what the Scripture claim he did, and will do what he has promised to do. We believe that Jesus is God and, because of this, we strive to make everything we do about him.
